Woodworking is a recent hobby of mine. There is a lot of wood around my house in the form of freshly fallen limbs and trees. When looking at a bandsaw mill, there are really only three parts: the bandsaw, a gantry that holds it horizontally, and rails that the whole thing can slide on. There are some tricky parts, but I ignored those at first and just jumped into building. This worked well for some things. I came up with a clever design for tensioning the blade based off milling machine ways.
I figured out a way to make the blade guides using just simple bearings and some scrap pieces.
I felt that most DIY sawmills used way too much metal and were too heavy, so I built mine with the least amount of steel that I could, and ended up with a very capable lightweight machine. However, some of my intuition was way off. Well, the first time I used the saw this motor overheated and almost caught fire! I have a much better understanding of horsepower now.
I had done no research on blades up until that point. The blade I did buy wandered badly in the cut, or rubbed against the wood and fell off several times. Because the first blade I bought was too narrow, there was no hope for the blade guides to do their job. In terms of cost and weight per horsepower, gas wins hands down over electricity.

Next I replaced my blade. In hindsight I know how crazy it was to not begin my design with the part that does the actual cutting.
It turns out there are only a few blades on the market that will work with a small saw like this, so I ordered one of each. This started to get expensive, but I chalked it up to research. I was lucky to find one that works great.
The result is a little sawmill that just tears through trees! I was very surprised at how well it works. The cedar log that I cut up next revealed an awesome purple heartwood. My very next step before cutting another board is going to be installing guards around the blade and drive belt.

I will also add a push handle. Then there are the rails. I will eventually replace it with a welded metal frame that has built-in clamps for holding the logs. In fact, if I were to build another mill, I would literally start from the ground up and focus first on log handling and making a solid foundation for the rest of the saw.

For a long time I didn't want anything to do with chainsaw mills, seeing them as hugely inferior to a bandsaw mill.
Chainsaw mills cut with a big fat chain running on a stiff metal guide bar; that gives us a number of disadvantages: 1. Thus it produces far more waste, 3. Cuts are much slower. I have some good reasons. First, if you work with wood, you know how lumber prices have gone through the roof lately. So, one advantage of having your own mill is cutting out the delivery middleman and eliminating the cost of shipping lumber all the way to you, which means saving money — a whole lot of money if you have a house, barn, or similarly large structure to raise. I'd have had to order them custom-sawed since clear fir or spruce "dimensional" construction lumber comes stocked only in thicknesses and widths calculated to produce the cheapest stick-built house frames.
The board that's called a 2 x 4 is no longer an honest 2" thick by 4" wide. You pay for the wood that was in the "kerf," the cut in the log that gets turned to sawdust, and for the thin shavings removed to finish the rough board smooth. You just don't get to take the wood chips home with you. Boards left rough and splintery but full sized may be a tiny fraction of an inch out of true, but they can save you time and wood, as you can space larger boards further apart.
Also, if left exposed to view inside the building, over-sized beams and rough-cut boards will give your home a rugged, hand-hewn look. With your own mill, you can cut local softwoods to frame buildings and you can saw up local hardwood logs for mantles, doors, paneling and other house trim, or to make into furniture. I make use of such scarce hardwoods and hard-to-find softwood species such as black walnut, pecan, cypress, and yellow poplar that would normally be wasted; for example, overgrown shade trees cut out of house lots that are usually split into firewood or burned and chipped on the spot.
The mill has also enabled me to use softwoods that would have gone to waste. Southern yellow pine is the construction-grade lumber they make into pressure-treated rot-proof lumber, called "PT.
The construction crew had them piled for burning and didn't mind a bit my hauling them away. I also make lumber from pines that are infested with pine-bark beetles. There is no known way to reverse the beetles, so cutting the tree while it is still living and good for lumber seems more logical than letting it die and rot away.
Though not all my lumber comes from scavenging, I get a considerable feeling of satisfaction when I can turn a tree that would have been wasted into something useful. And, so long as my truck runs and I continue to spot trees that are free for the taking, the mill allows me to cut anything from a baseball bat to a house with little thought about raw material costs.
Sawmills are pretty straightforward. In the traditional mill, there is a power source, a wheeled carriage on a track, a sawblade, and assorted shafts and bearings all connected with gears or a collection of drums, belts, and pulleys. A bandsaw mill is an oversized version of the common wood shop power tool. It is a closed loop of thin, flexible steel, with sawteeth along one edge, that runs continuously around a set of flat pulleys.
To develop cutting speed and maintain momentum without breaking, a "6-foot mill" capable of cutting large logs requires an extensive structure with big pulleys to support the 36" run of 6"- to" wide blade needed to expose six feet of running blade.
This type of rig was common in 18th and 19th century water-powered mills where the massive wood beams of the blade-support mechanism stretched between three stories of the mill house.This started as an idea after making my homemade band saw mill and comparing the apparent inefficiency of that to the simple chainsaw mills that most use. I got to thinking about how I could rig one up to cut my short lengths of hard maple, and came up with the idea of making the saw run on a post that is set in the ground.
The saw would be mounted on a simple wooden carriage that fits around the post. The square shape of the post would keep the saw straight as it cuts down.
Definitely worth a try, so I decided to rig it up to run a test cut. To get started, I dug a hole in a good location to plant the post. I set the log in place and made that plumb with wedges:. I drove a couple of screws through the bottom edge of the log into the base to keep it from moving, and made sure they were well away from where the saw would be cutting.
To keep the top from moving, I ran braces down to heavy logs. A more permanent solution would be to sink another post offset from where the log is to run shorter braces, but I think driving screws through wooden braces would still be the fastest, most efficient way to get that done:.
The first cut was a complete success. The saw powered down through the log without hesitation and left a very clean for a chainsaw straight cut:. The idea is to only use this to flatten a face or square up a larger one, then do the remainder of the cutting on my big homemade band saw.
